Succulents are popular plants known for their unique shapes, vibrant colours, and low maintenance requirements. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced plant enthusiast, understanding the essentials of succulent care can help your plants thrive. Here are some fundamental tips to ensure your succulents stay healthy and beautiful.

1. Proper Lighting

Succulents need plenty of sunlight to maintain their vibrant colours and grow healthily. Place your succulents in a bright location where they can receive at least six hours of indirect sunlight daily. If you notice your plants stretching or becoming leggy, they might need more light.

2. Watering Routine

One of the most common mistakes in succulent care is overwatering. Succulents store water in their leaves and stems, so they don’t need frequent watering. Water your succulents thoroughly but infrequently. Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Typically, watering once every two to three weeks is sufficient.

3. Well-Draining Soil

Succulents thrive in well-draining soil that prevents water from pooling around their roots. Use a cactus or succulent-specific potting mix or create your own by mixing regular potting soil with sand or perlite. Ensure your pots have drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

4. Temperature and Humidity

Succulents prefer warm, dry conditions and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. Ideally, keep them in an environment between 15°C to 27°C (60°F and 80°F). Avoid placing succulents in areas with high humidity or cold drafts, as these conditions can cause rot.

5. Fertilising

While succulents don’t require frequent fertilising, providing them with nutrients can promote growth. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength and apply it once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Caring for succulents is relatively easy, making them perfect for busy individuals or those new to gardening. By following these essential tips, you’ll ensure your succulents remain healthy and vibrant, bringing beauty to your home or garden.
